Rev. Wasike sent me this story to post here.

Fadhili is one of our pupils in our school. Jennifer from the States bought him a football, which Rev. Wasike purchased in Nairobi and recently brought up to Kimilili. When the football was handed over to him, he was in the school compound with other children. The football had no air in it, so Fadhili and his friends rushed into town to inflate air in the ball.

When they came back with the ball and made ready to play, all of the adults were attending a meeting and we became aware of irregular noises coming from the nearby lot. When we went outdoors we saw that there was no order, everybody was jumping for the ball, running up –down, left –right… our school children had never seen a real football before. The children were so busy, each running up and down trying to hit the ball, and they were so overwhelmed that they could not play with any order or by any rules. Each was trying to shoot but since there was only one ball against the whole population, many spent the day shooting air.

The teachers tried to impose some order to the mayhem. First they tried to isolate Fadhili with the ball so he could play alone, but this was completely unrealistic due to the curiosity of the other pupils and the teachers thought it wise to allow the kids to play freely, with Fadhili acting as if he was the prefect of the ball.

Teachers had to be very alert, as it did not take long when complaints of injuries started flocking in. Neighbours were also affected by the overwhelming joy in the shoots from the playing field. It didn’t take long before the neighbouring boys were running for the ball along with our children, and the neighbouring girls stood unbelievingly watching from a distance. The school field became too small in a minute for the exercise and the teachers believe this was one of the reasons why injuries were many. However, no serious injury was reported.

Fadhili proudly left the school compound after the ceremonies with his new football and a guardian for security of the same, and in the company of friends tending to follow him...
